More than 100 Houston Ministers Throw Support Behind Peter Brown For Mayor
HOUSTON, TX, Tuesday, October 21, 2008
Today, the Reverend William A. Lawson joined Bishop James Dixon II and dozens of other ministers and bishops in backing Houston City Council Member Peter Brown for Mayor in 2009. The announcement took place in front of the Houston Garden Center in Hermann Park where family and friends gathered to hear the Reverend Lawson, Bishop Dixon and Council Member Brown speak.
Bishop Dixon said, "Peter's words and his work match. I think every one of us wants a leader in this city who has words that match his work and work that matches his words. As this campaign season approaches, it's very important that we look at the work and not listen to the words."
"It is true that wherever people are in need, there is Peter Brown," the Reverend Lawson said. "Long before there was a Hurricane Ike, there was a Peter Brown right here in Houston. And anybody who had anything that called for leadership saw Peter Brown there. I've been in some of those small neighborhoods where people called out for help. Most people did not respond to those neighborhoods. Peter Brown did," Lawson said.
Another speaker at the event, community leader and activist Mary Ramos said, "When I first met Peter, I was inspired by him. This man truly, truly is an honorable man. He will do the best job. I give you my word. This man can move this city forward where it's got to go."
“Today’s endorsement is evidence of just how strong the support is among Houstonians for Peter Brown for Mayor," said Friends of Peter Brown for Mayor Chair James Robertson, “The dozens of Pastors who are supporting Peter Brown represent a widespread and diverse population who are ready to see Houston transformed into a great world city.”
Council Member Brown, a third generation Houstonian, architect and urban planner, is very pleased with the show of confidence. He says, “The ministers who have pledged their support today are some of the most well-respected, honored and civically-minded members of our society. These ministers have agreed to work together with me to protect our neighborhoods, clean up our environment and expand our economy.”
Thousands of “Friends of Peter Brown” have already pledged their support to the At Large Houston City Council Member in his potential run for Mayor.
